Construction Begins on Over 230 Billion Dollar Advanced Energy Storage Battery Project

Since the beginning of this year, there have been 34 start-up projects for power and energy storage batteries (including lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries), with a total investment amount exceeding 234.4 billion yuan, and the planned construction capacity exceeds 570 GWh per year.

Power lithium-ion battery energy storage production expansion continues to be hot

Since the beginning of this year, after a rapid growth, the new energy vehicle industry has shown a slowdown in growth, and the warning of overcapacity in power batteries has been heard constantly.

Zhu Huarong, Chairman of Chang'an Automobile, publicly stated that it is estimated that by 2025, China's demand for lithium-ion power batteries will reach about 1000 GWh, and the current industry's planned production capacity has reached 4800 GWh, resulting in severe overcapacity.

Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of CATL, also stated that more and more companies worldwide are entering the competition on the power battery track, and the first half of the power battery industry has been able to meet market demand. The second half of the power battery industry will lead market demand, strive for excellence, and move towards a new stage of high-quality development together with the industry.

It can be seen that major battery manufacturers are actively expanding their production capacity, and with the influx of various capital sources, competition in the field of lithium-ion power batteries will become increasingly fierce.

Expansion Under the Pressure of Overcapacity of Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage

Currently, due to different capacity utilization rates and demand orders, different power battery companies have different speeds and progress in capacity expansion.

In the latest reply to the inquiry letter on the fund-raising project, EVE Energy stated that so far, the company has obtained a total of about 88 GWh of customer potential demand for cylindrical lithium iron phosphate batteries in the next 5 years, and a total of about 392 GWh of customer potential demand for three yuan large cylindrical batteries in the next 5 years, which is enough to cover the newly added energy storage and power battery production capacity of the company's fund-raising project.

Wang Yu, Chairman of Funeng Technology, also publicly stated that Funeng Technology does not have the problem of overcapacity. The company is very cautious in capacity expansion, and all capacity expansion is supported by long-term orders. At present, Funeng Technology has sufficient orders to cover the existing capacity. In order to meet the battery products required for the second phase of the development of new energy vehicles, the company has started to expand the production capacity of SPS super soft pack batteries.

Analysis believes that in the current stage, investing in expanding power battery production capacity requires clarifying the positioning of new products, doing precise performance design based on application markets, and ensuring the core competitiveness of products in the market. Only in this way can we go through the new cycle of structural overcapacity and achieve high-quality development.

Energy storage becomes the second demand scenario for lithium batteries

With the surge in global demand for energy storage, the expansion of lithium-ion battery energy storage is accelerating.

At the latest investor event, CATL stated that with the promotion of carbon neutrality goals, there is great potential for the future development of power batteries. At the same time, there is also huge demand for battery applications in energy storage and other fields.

GGII predicts that the demand for energy storage market will exceed 1 TWh by 2030.

Statistics show that since the beginning of this year, there have been 21 projects involving energy storage batteries, including EVE Energy, Ruipulan Jun, Far East Horizon, Ganfeng Lithium, BYD, Enervee, Haisida, and Xinxin Group, among others.

It should be noted that battery safety is still a pain point and bottleneck encountered in the development of the energy storage market. As the world pays more and more attention to the safety of energy storage batteries, the market will also move toward companies with technical and operational capabilities. , brand influence and scale strength are concentrated and tilted towards manufacturers.

Sodium-ion battery production expansion is "surging"

Statistics show that since this year, 4 projects involving sodium-ion batteries have been signed and started. The main entities expanding production include battery companies such as Veken Technology, Dongchi New Energy, and Xingchu Century.

At present, sodium-ion batteries have found commercial breakthroughs in the fields of small power supplies such as two-wheeled vehicles and light vehicles, as well as household storage and communication energy storage. With the large-scale release of sodium-ion battery production capacity, it will also "share" the huge market demand with lithium-ion batteries in the future.
